Meet Ernesto

Ernesto Olivares Martinez is a community safety and violence prevention professional, writer, and longtime public servant whose work has focused for more than four decades on strengthening communities through collaboration, accountability, and informed decision-making. His career spans law enforcement, local government, and community leadership, giving him a unique perspective on how public policies are created and how their consequences are experienced in everyday life.

Ernesto served over 30 years in law enforcement, retiring as a police lieutenant, and later served three terms on the Santa Rosa City Council, including serving as Mayor. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of public safety, public health, education, and community organizations, helping cities and nonprofits across California develop comprehensive, data-informed approaches to violence prevention and community well-being. His work emphasizes prevention, trust-building, and shared responsibility rather than quick fixes or slogans.

What sets Ernesto’s perspective apart is his understanding that decisions discussed in council chambers and policy meetings are not just abstract ideas. They shape neighborhoods, families, schools, and futures. That awareness guides both his professional work and the reflections shared on this site.

Ernesto is a Mexican immigrant who came to the United States as a child and grew up in a farmworker family in Northern California. Those early experiences continue to shape his views on opportunity, belonging, and the real impact of public systems. He lives in Santa Rosa with his wife, Rita, and is the proud father of three adult daughters and a grandfather. Family, community, and service remain central to his life and values.

Why This Matters Today brings together Ernesto’s professional experience and personal history to offer thoughtful, grounded commentary on current issues shaping communities and democracy right now. The goal is not to persuade through volume or outrage, but to encourage readers—especially those new to his work—to slow down, consider the context, and reflect on why today’s decisions matter long after the headlines fade.
